Tom Alder - Associate

Tom is a planning and property development lawyer who joined the property development team upon the completion of his training contract with LA in 2007. He has a particular interest in planning law and advises a range of clients on both contentious and non-contentious planning issues. The planning process is a key ingredient of any development project and, as a natural extension of his planning expertise, Tom advises a broad range of clients on development projects, including site acquisitions and disposals, financing and construction documentation.

Additionally, Tom regularly advises on the environmental aspects of both corporate and property acquisitions and disposals, and in particular provides advice on issues relating to contaminated land and the impact of the "polluter pays” principle.

• Negociated planning and infrastructure agreements on behalf of a nationwide housebuilder
• Acting for a care sector operator in dealing with the planning, construction and environmental aspects of a share purchase agreement where the main asset was a partially constructed care home
• Advising an airport operator in respect of planning issues arising from the construction of a new terminal building and negotiating the terms of a S106 agreement
• Acting for a housebuilder in negotiating with the local planning authority to secure a variation to a section 106 agreement, reducing the contributions payable by over £700,000 in circumstances where the relevant triggers for payment of all contributions had been passed
